SamTrans will implement new fares Sunday, Feb. 1, following a series of community meetings and a public hearing.

The adult local fare will increase 25 cents to $1.75, with the cost of adult monthly passes and tokens also increasing. The express cash one-way fare will increase 50 cents to $4.50, and the express pass fare will increase proportionality.

Eligible Discount and Youth fares will not change. Paratransit fares will increase 50 cents; the Lifeline fare will increase 25 cents.

The fare increase will help cover increasing costs. Passenger fares cover approximately 18 percent of the cost to operate the bus. The last fare increase was in September 2005.
