Transit District Releases Strategic Plan

As the clouds on the state’s budget horizon darken, the San Mateo County Transit District is looking into the future with optimism. The recently released District Strategic Plan 2009 – 2013 outlines the challenges that lay ahead for the transit agency and charts a new course for the next five years.

Recently adopted by the board of directors, work on the plan began last spring. In addition to direction from the board, input for the plan was gathered from staff, key community stake holders and the public at large.

The most critical issue facing the Transit District is a growing structural deficit at a time when the demand for transportation services is increasing. The strategic plan addresses this issue and provides a road map for the future that is focused on customer service. Six key focus areas are targeted in the plan: financial integrity, multimodal services, transportation and land use, customers, business practices and employees.

The Transit District operates the SamTrans bus service, Redi-Wheels paratransit service for persons with disabilities and funds shuttle services that link key employment centers with BART and Caltrain service. The Transit District also is the managing agency for Caltrain and the San Mateo County Transportation Authority.
