Transit District Progress Report Goes Green

The San Mateo County Transit District’s 2008 Progress Report has gone green. The concise, triple-fold report printed on recycled paper highlights the ecological benefits of using public transportation.

Ridership on public transportation across the country is its highest level in 50 years. With the heightened awareness of the environment, the public is beginning to realize that taking public transportation is one way an individual can make a positive contribution to reduce global warming.

The report emphasizes the District’s many contributions, from shuttles that take commuters from Caltrain and BART stations to work sites and highway improvement projects that reduce traffic congestion to the SamTrans bus service and transit-oriented development.

Financial information for Fiscal Year 2009 also is included in the report. The largest item in the capital budget is a $21.9 million allocation for new SamTrans buses. The buses, which will replace 137 1993 buses, will be the most energy-efficient diesel vehicles on the market. It is expected that the public will be riding on these “green” buses by the end of next year.
